Performance improvements

Does the SDK run simulations faster than the toolkit GUI, or are there ways to improve performance? The toolkit appears to be running a bit slower than real-time, which may be problematic for our use case. (And it's only using ~30% of the available CPU power.) Are there things we can do to improve performance - reduce sample rate, remove outputs, turn on multi-core processing, change some settings somewhere?

I'm running on (I think) a Raspberry Pi 3, with the 2017-11-29 build of Raspbian.
